Fix Those Leaks!

According to WaterSense, leaks can account for 11,000 gallons of water wasted in the home every year, or enough to fill a backyard swimming pool.
To check for leaks:

• Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.

Inspect faucet washers and gaskets for wear. Dripping faucets can waste 3,000 gallons of water each year. If necessary, replace the faucet with a WaterSense labeled model.

Toilets often leak. Find a leak by placing a dye tablet or drop of food coloring in the toilet tank and waiting a few minutes. If any color shows up in the bowl without flushing, you have a leak.

• Analyze your water bill. If a family of four exceeds 12,000 gallons per month over the winter, check for leaks!

Leaky toilets can waste up to 200 gallons per day.
