Water Conservation Program Begins in Sharon -
February 2008
The Town of Sharon Water
Department received a
grant from the
Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection for a one year water
conservation program to reduce residential water
consumption. The program includes development
of a water conservation plan to assist the Town in
meeting water conservation goals. It also includes
development of a conservation curriculum within
the Sharon schools, outreach to civic groups,
retrofitting of municipal buildings with low flow
toilets, installation of water saving irrigation systems, and general education about water saving practices through newspaper columns and the internet.
The Water Department has partnered with the Neponset River Watershed Association to help facilitate the grant and has hired a Water Conservation Coordinator to assist in the program.
The Water Department has also teamed with the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense program to help consumers save water for future generations and reduce costs on their utility bills. WaterSense aims to decrease indoor and outdoor water use through water-efficient products and simple water-saving practices. The program encourages customers to look for WaterSense labeled products, which have been independently certified for efficiency and performance, and promotes water-saving techniques that reduce stress on water systems and the environment.
